Getting Around Venice: the well curbs

Venice is a city rich in architectural beauties of big and small sizes. In the middle of the campo, the city squares in Venice, it is possible to admire the famous well curbs.

The well curb is the final and exterior part of a well, the construction overlapping and protecting the opening. Also called ferrule, it is built in order to avoid accidental fall in the well and also to offer a support. Over the centuries, the simple architectural and functional element has gained more elaborate and complex artistic forms. In particularly, the well curbs of Venice are famous, because of their rich relief decorations.
