Valeria Costa in The Women’s Burden

Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is hosting the exhibition dedicated to the Italian painter Valeria Costa, called The Women’s Burden. Sulle tracce del neo-espressionismo al femminile (“On the trail of the female neo-expressionism”) until the 28th of April.

Valeria Costa is a painter of the 20th Century, divided between different artistic trends. She was born in a family of art and begins her carrier as a costumer and a set designer and the theatre world will remain a constant of her life. Her approach to painting is premature and it gets more intense when the young woman comes into contact with the Neue Sachlichkeit of the German art of the Thirties. Costa leaves her original realism in order to embrace the neo-expressionism’s rawness, its violent colours and its obsessive interest for the human body.

The exhibition consists of a selection of Costa’s works made during her neo-expressionism’s period. The focus is the theme of the woman’s burden, which is a leitmotif of Costa’s production. The pain is inflected in many ways: birth, maternity, family, death, war, fear and defence.
