Getting Around Venice: the Murano Glass Museum

If you’re visiting Venice and you love the art of glass, then you absolutely should stop by the Murano Glass Museum.

The Murano Glass Museum is based in the historical Palazzo dei Vescovi di Torcello, an ancient buildind with typical flamboyant Gothic shapes. Throughout history, the ancient diocese had different functions: in 1861 the central hall began to host the mayor Colleoni and the abbot and glass art expert Vincenzo Zanetti’s project: an archive aimed at illustrating the history and life of the island.

The donation of ancient glass products of the Murano island was finally in their deserved location by Palazzo dei Vescovi di Torcello, converting the archive into a museum. With the annexation of Murano island to the Venice municipality in 1923, the Murano Glass Museum was included into the city patrimony, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia. In 1932 there were a reorganization and  an enrichment of the collections that never stopped: the donations from the furnaces of the island contribute to the expansion of the contemporary collection. In addition, thanks to the donation of the Archeological Superintendence, the museum also got an archeological section, that includes precious Renaissance pieces and glasses from the Croatian city of Zara.
